MUSCAT: Orion Gymnastics Oman excelled with 24 medals in the first international gymnastics competition at GymnastEx Club in Dubai on March 4.
The Orion Gymnastics Level 1 team participated in the championship along with 16 clubs from Oman, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Jordan.
From Orion Gymnastics Oman, nine gymnasts aged 8 to 11 competed in the competition following the Level 1 USA Gymnastics Development Curriculum. They performed routines in four artistic gymnastics events: vaults, asymmetric bars, beams, and floor.
The young gymnasts team included Maya H, Lamees Hamad al Shidhani (Oman), Zazie Hoffman (USA),Sophia Hughes, Aya Khorchid (UK), Aya-Rita Kattar (Canada), Anna Elizabeth Tan (Singapore), Alexandra Muromtseva (Russia), and Haya El Maghraby (Egypt).
The girls won a total of 24 gold, silver, and bronze medals in apparatus events: vaults, asymmetrical bars, beam, and floor while Aya Khorchid claimed an all-around third place (bronze) trophy.
Khorchid bagged silver medals in floor and beam, while she had bronze in vault and bars categories. Ionela Yammine (Romania) and Olena Miekha (Ukraine) trained the gymnasts for the competition.
Yammine said the girls performed excellently to bring laurels to the center.”Our efforts in training reaped rewards as the girls put in their best to win several medals.”
Miekha also credited the young gymnasts for their splendid performance in Dubai.Lamees al Shidhani shined with gold on the floor and silver medals on the beam and vault.
Other medal winners included Maya H (beam-gold, floor-silver), Alexandra Muromtseva (floor-bronze, beam-bronze), Aya Rita Kattar (floor-bronze, beam-bronze, vault-gold), Zazie Hoffman (beam-silver, vault-bronze), Sophia Hughes (vault-bronze, beam-bronze, floor-gold) and Anna Elizabeth Tan (vault-silver, beam-gold) while Haya El Maghrabi sizzled with twin golds in beam and floor.
